Adoption and Foster Care Program
Our Mission is to provide safe homes and caring families for children in need;

and to promote the safety and well-being of children.

Facts:

  • Close to 10,000 children are wards of the state of Arizona.
  • 53% reside in the Maricopa County area.
  • 56% belong to a minority group.
  • 33% of the children are age 1 to 5.
  • There is a large shortage of foster homes throughout Maricopa County.

*According to the ADES Child Welfare Reporting requirements Semi-Annual Report for the period of April 1st, 2006 through September 30th, 2006.

 

Some of the requirements to become an Adoptive or Foster Family are:

  • Attend an orientation
  • 21 years old (18 for adoptive parents)
  • Medical exam
  • Finger printed
  • First Aid/CPR (Foster Care)
  • Legal residence of U.S.
  • Single or married
  • Complete 30 hours of Pre-Service Training

 

VOCABULARY

Orientation: A session of preliminary information about the foster care and adoption process that lasts approximately two hours.   During this step you will learn who the children in need are, what the role and responsibilities of foster and adoptive parents (resource families) are, and what the basic requirements to become a resource family are.

Pre-Service Training:
State mandated training for selection and preparation of prospective resource families through the Partnering for Safety and Permanence –Model Approach to Partnerships in Parenting (PS-MAPP) program.  This program provides a structural format by which prospective resource families make decisions about their ability, willingness, and readiness to participate in the foster care and adoptive program
