Volunteers ... Partners in Caring

As we strive to make a positive difference in the lives of children we are entrusted with, our volunteers are a vital element of our team here at our Kids Campus! It is through the gerenous help of our volunteers that WVCCC is able to achieve and provide the level of quality we aspire to, and it is through the dedication of people like you that these precious little ones are positively affected every day. We cannot express enough how much we value our volunteers!

The primary goal of our Volunteer Services is to partner with the Child Care and Administrative staff to assist and enhance WVCCC’s commitment towards the care, development, and safety of the children that come to our Kids Campus.

Individuals wishing to join our volunteer team need to be at least 21 years of age and are required to complete an application and fingerprinting/background check process.

Types of Volunteer Jobs

Volunteers may work in the following direct child contact areas:

Child Care: Assigned to a 2-3 hour shift working in one of the houses. Childcare volunteers assist the programming staff with the daily activities of the children. These activities include crafts, reading, games, and outside play. Childcare volunteers are required to make a weekly commitment to provide consistency for the children.

Special Projects: Special Project Volunteers work on an occasional basis providing a special event for the children, such as a monthly craft activity in the Enrichment Center.

Field Trip: Would you like to attend off-site field trips with the children to provide extra supervision and ensure that the children have a good time?

Special Interest Classes: Do you have a skill or interest that you would like to share with the children such as dance, music, art, literature, etc?

Group Visits: Groups wishing to provide an on-site or off-site activity for the children need to complete a Group Event Request Form for approval by the Programming Director no later than 2 weeks prior to the event. Group leaders can request a Group Policy Packet for more information.

Volunteers are also needed for areas that are not direct child contact related.

These areas are just  as important to supporting the overall success of WVCCC’s mission.

How do I become a Volunteer?

APPLICATION: Due to the nature of the children that we serve, there is an extensive application and screening process for volunteer applicants. Each step of the application process is crucial for meeting our licensing regulations. The process to become a volunteer can seem daunting and it isn’t our intent to overwhelm prospective applicants, but is of utmost importance and priority for the safety of the children we serve.

ORIENTATION: New volunteers go through a thorough orientation training before beginning work and all volunteers are provided with on-going educational events throughout the year. Additionally, all volunteers receive an annual performance evaluation to maintain the integrity of WVCCC’s program. Volunteers at WVCCC must be a minimum of 21 years of age.

SECURITY: Due to the stringent security needs for our campus, all volunteers are required to wear a uniform shirt and their badge when working. Also for our security plan, volunteers log in and out as they enter and exit campus.

1. Complete the application packet and return to the volunteer office:

  • Volunteer Services Application
  • Volunteer Applicant Questionnaire
  • Statement of Risk and Concern
  • Volunteer Agreement
  • Health Waiver
  • Notarized Criminal History Affidavit
  • Photo ID
  • Personal Reference Forms – to be completed by 3 personal or professional references who will return the completed form to the volunteer office in the envelope provided.

2. Schedule personal interview with Coordinator of Volunteer Services

The application packet must be received by the volunteer office before scheduling your personal interview. During the personal interview, if both the applicant and WVCCC feel that this is a good volunteer match, the next step would be to have the fingerprinting and background check completed. The clearance card must be received from the state before volunteering begins, which takes on average 6-8 weeks.

3. Attend volunteer orientation training

There is a two-hour training for new volunteers before they can begin working. During this training, the following areas will be discussed:

  • Overview of West Valley Child Crisis Center: Our history as well as WVCCC’s mission, vision, and goals
  • Information on the population we serve
  • Overview of the Volunteer Services program
  • Policies and procedures
  • Confidentiality
  • Code of conduct
  • Health codes
  • Security and emergency preparedness
  • Uniform and badge
  • Review of the various volunteer job descriptions and qualifications

4. Choose volunteer job assignment and receive training.

5. Commit to a regular schedule and begin volunteering.

How can a Group get involved?

There is an opportunity for small groups to volunteer at WVCCC in four ways:
  • Provide a special activity for the children on-site such as a craft, games, etc.
  • Provide a field trip for a group of the children off-site to places such as the zoo, the park, a restaurant, etc.
  • Provide a work day such as painting, repairing bicycles, landscaping, etc.
  • Raise up needed items from the Wish List
